Connecting to Nature and Community
Iguana footprints are more common on South Andros than human footprints, and you’re more likely to hear the sounds of birds than you are human voices. Tiamo Resort remains small to ensure that connections with nature are preserved
Natural inhabitors
More than 200 different species of birds, including the Great Lizard Cuckoo and the Greater Flamingo live on South Andros Island. One of Tiamo’s nature concierges, Mikel, will help make the introduction. Just 18 years old, he’s mastered the call of nearly every bird on the island.
Orchids, bromeliads, giant cacti, land crabs and termite mounds all are found deep in the brush surrounding Tiamo. Barbara, a native Bahamian, leads 3 ½-mile hikes through the wilderness, pointing out plants, telling stories and providing tips on how to use plants for medicinal purposes to cure everything from the common cold to impotency.
South Andros is the bonefish capital of the world, but it also is home to tidal flats and mangrove swamps teeming with tarpon, barracuda, jacks and several species of shark.
Community Connections
With 35 employees, Tiamo is the largest employer on the island, and has contributed greatly to the economy of the community as well as individuals.
As a teenager, Makia Russell began working at Tiamo when it opened. The Hartmans quickly realized she was a bright girl with huge potential. Makia now is a manager at the resort.
An 18-year-old nature guide had a real passion for ecotourism, so Tiamo awarded him a scholarship to attend school.
Tiamo regularly participates in local clean-up projects, pays staff to donate their time and provides transportation. Staff members also are encouraged to recycle and be more environmentally conscious at home and in their communities.
Because of a partnership with local schools, island children are learning about the importance of ecotourism. Classes are offered in reef and fish protection and iguana and turtle protection classes, among others. The programs are funded in part by Tiamo and the following:
